Speaking to IQNA, Secretary General of the World Forum for Proximity of Islamic Schools of Thought (WFPIST) Ayatollah Mohsen Araki said the decision by Donald Trump actually paves the way for the annihilation of the occupying regime.
The injudicious decision started a new Intifada of the Palestinian people that is supported by all Muslims in the world, he said.
The cleric added that the move was so ill-advised that even Trump’s regional allies who are the main instigators of crises in the West Asia region reacted to it and refused to support it.
He went on to criticize the United States’ dual approach to the issue of Palestine, saying that Washington lacks a proper understanding of the Middle East realities.
Trump officially declared the disputed city Israel’s capital, despite warnings from around the world that the measure risks triggering a fresh wave of violence in the Middle East.
In a speech at the White House on December 6, Trump said his administration would also begin a years-long process of moving the American embassy in Tel Aviv to the holy city.
Palestinian leaders had previously warned the move would threaten a two-state solution.
On December 21, More than 100 countries defied Trump and voted in favor of a United Nations General Assembly resolution calling for the United States to withdraw its decision.
Israel has occupied East Quds since the 1967 Middle East war. It annexed the area in 1980 and sees it as its exclusive domain. Under international law, the area is considered to be occupied territory.
