It quoted the Arab country’s foreign ministry as saying that Muallem died on Monday morning.
He is survived by three children.
Born in 1941 in Damascus, Muallem finished high school in 1960 and graduated from the University of Cairo three years later, getting a BA in economics.
He joined Syria’s foreign ministry in 1964 and worked in Syrian diplomatic missions in several countries.
Muallem was appointed the foreign minister of Syria in 2006 and served in the post until his death.
He has written several books on independence, the issue of Palestine and the Middle East.
