TEHRAN (IQNA) – The Holy Quran has many verses about how to speak, including instructions on not shouting in conversation, being truthful in quoting someone, and avoiding lies and slanders.

This is according to Islamic studies researcher Ayatollah Ahmad Moballeghi, who, speaking to IQNA, elaborated on the Quran’s viewpoints about dialogue and correct ways of dialogue. Excerpts from his remarks are as follows:

Dialogue has certain manners according to Islam that need to be observed, otherwise it may lead to disputes and conflicts.

Speaking gently is one of the manners emphasized in Islamic teachings as it plays a major role in conveying one’s message and in the two sides’ enjoying the conversation.

Its importance has been mentioned in verses 43 and 44 of Surah Taha: “Go to Pharaoh, for he has become insolent. Speak to him with gentle words; perhaps he will ponder or fear.”

Another important thing is that if one of the two sides of the dialogue is in a higher position in terms of age, social status, etc, he should not mention this in his words. The Quran also attaches importance to respecting each other’s beliefs for having a healthy conversation. Moreover, being biased about something and forcing others to accept it, even if it is the truth, is not suitable according to Islam.

Hence, the Holy Quran considers dialogue as exchanging views and it welcomes having doubts because through it one can study every subject and come to a belief about it themselves.

In today’s society dialogue is a powerful means to convey messages and concepts. By reading and contemplating verses of the Quran, we realize that the first and most lasting efforts of messengers of God is speaking to people. We read in the Quran about their different ways of speaking to people.

The Hoy Quran considers upholding justice as the main principle in all dialogues and also emphasizes the social and popular effects of dialogue. It forbids all people from bullying and seeking dominance over others in dialogue.
