Mustafa al-Shurbaji’s photos feature his mother reading the Holy Book in the minarets of Sultan Hassan and Al-Refaei mosques in Cairo, Egypt’s capital.

A minaret is a slender tower, typically part of a mosque, with a balcony from which a muezzin calls Muslims to prayer.

His photos won the top prize in the competition, titled “My Heritage in Photography”, al-Misrawi website reported.

The competition was organized by the Arab country’s culture ministry in cooperation with the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) with the aim of promoting Cairo, which has been named the cultural capital of the Muslim world in 2023.

Al-Shurbaji took photos of his mother in minarets of mosques during the restrictions imposed due to the coronavirus pandemic between 2020 and 2022.

At the time, people were required to stay at home and avoid gatherings as much as possible.

His mother’s father died during that period and Al-Shurbaji’s mother would go to the minarets of the old mosques to read the Quran for the soul of her departed father.

His photos have won numerous prizes in other international photography contests in countries like Oman and Iraq as well.
