Best Means to Get Closer to God

TEHRAN (IQNA) – People are always looking for means with which to get to all of their desires and wishes.

Because God is the source of all blessings in the world, one should ask Him in order to reach his desires. According to religious sources, the best means to ask God for something is the Holy Quran.

Asking for something is a way of meeting needs. But what should be careful who he is asking for and why. God is the only one who knows all of mankind’s needs and fulfills them. Sometimes it may seem that someone else has fulfilled our need but the fact is that even that person is a divine agent. If God does not want something to happen, it won’t happen a problem will not be solved even if all people on earth try to solve it.

Imam Ali (AS) says in Sermon 176 of Nahj al-Balagha: “Pray to Allah through it and turn to Allah with its love. Do not ask the people through it. There is nothing like it through which the people should turn to Allah, the Sublime.”

Explaining this part of the sermon, Ayatollah Nasser Makarem Shriazi writes: Imam Ali (AS) orders us to ask God for what we want through the Quran. What it means is that we should adorn our existence with the teachings and guidance of the Quran and get ready for what we have asked for to be given to us. We should also turn to the Quran with love because everyone who loves the Holy Book, will act upon its teachings and in that way will turn to God in a proper manner.

Imam Ali (AS) also calls on us not to ask through the Quran from other people. This shows that some people use the Quran to reach their worldly objectives.

Imam Sadiq (AS) said in a Hadith that the qaris of Quran are three groups: Those who recite the Quran so that others will praise them, and those who recite the Quran so that they can reach worldly benefits. There is no good in reciting the Quran for these purposes. But there is a group of people who recite the Quran in their prayers in the day and at night in order to benefit spiritually.

Imam (AS) warns us not to be among the first two groups and urges us to use the Holy Quran as a means to get closer to God.

So everyone should make it his top priority to know God more through this book and get closer to Him. If someone has any other purpose when he approaches the Holy Book, he will be in major loss.
