TEHRAN (IQNA) – A ceremony was held in the northeastern Iranian holy city of Mashhad on Thursday to commemorate martyred Quran reciter Mohsen Hajihassani Kargar.

The ceremony was organized by the Awqaf and Charity Affairs Department of Khorasan Razavi province in Mashhad.

It began with recitation of verses from the Holy Quran by Hadi Esfandani, a pupil of Martyr Hajihassani Kargar, followed by an address by Hojat-ol-Islam Nasrollah Pejmanfar, head of the Iranian parliament’s cultural commission.

Mohsen Hajihassani Kargar, along with another top Iranian Quran reciter Hassan Danesh, was among hundreds of pilgrims who lost their life in a crush of pilgrims in Mina, near Mecca, during last year’s Hajj.

Hajihassani Kargar had just won the first title at the 2015 International Quran Recitation Competition of Malaysia.

More than 4700 pilgrims died on September 24, 2015, in the Mina tragedy.

The incident marked the worst ever tragedy during Hajj.

Iranian Hajj and Pilgrimage Organization put the final number of Iranian pilgrims killed in the disaster at 464.

The incident came nearly two weeks after tens of Hajj pilgrims were killed in another tragic incident in Mecca.

On September 11, 2015, a massive construction crane crashed into Mecca’s Grand Mosque in stormy weather, killing at least 107 people, including 11 Iranians, and injuring 201 others.

Saudi authorities have come under fire for their inability to ensure the safety of hundreds of thousands of pilgrims who converge on Mecca every year.
