IQNA – Bhatara Police in Bangladesh arrested a North South University (NSU) student over desecrating the Holy Quran.

A North South University (NSU) student in Bangladesh has been arrested by Bhatara Police over desecrating the Holy Quran.

The move by Apurbo Pal has sparked widespread outrage across social media and within the university community.

The 22-year-old uploaded five videos to his Facebook profile on Saturday morning, showing him kicking and tearing pages from a copy of the Quran outside a classroom in the university's NAC-2 building at approximately 9AM.

When confronted by fellow students, Apurbo reportedly claimed the book was purchased with his father's money, giving him the right to treat it as he wished.

The footage captures heated exchanges, with one student reminding him that such actions are unacceptable in a country where 90 percent of the population practices Islam.

Campus security intervened swiftly, removing Apurbo from the premises before police took him into custody later that day.

The incident occurred after a lecturer denied him entry to class for arriving late, prompting him to sit outside with the religious text.

The NSU Islam Practitioners Facebook page detailed the events, describing how Apurbo "deliberately placed the Holy Quran on the ground, kicked it, tore out its pages and recorded a video".

The post characterized the act as one that "deeply insults not only Muslim religious sensibilities but universal human decency as well".

University records reveal Apurbo had previously been suspended for three semesters due to disciplinary violations and immoral conduct.

Faculty members have consistently reported his arrogant behavior and boundary-crossing actions throughout his academic tenure.

Allegations against him include entering a mosque wearing shoes and attempting to strike the imam with his footwear when confronted.

More seriously, he faces accusations of involvement in a December incident at Ghatpara area where an individual was allegedly doused with petrol and set alight.

Campus sources describe Apurbo as a heavy drug user, with claims he uses injectable substances for intoxication. His behavior towards classmates has reportedly ranged from physical aggression; including grabbing someone's beard, to making inflammatory remarks that escalate into violent disputes.
