TEHRAN (IQNA) – The Noble Quran offers a comprehensive plan for all the needs of humans in different fields. Health, as one of the most basic needs of mankind, has been stressed in the Quran and in Islamic teachings.

Imam Ali (AS) names security and health as hidden mercies, noting that threats to any of them will endanger the whole society. Accordingly, important points have been mentioned about health and preserving it in Islam.

In the religious culture, God is the One that heals the patients and other individuals or tools are just a means for that. The Holy Quran quotes Abraham as saying: “and [God] heals me when I am sick.” (Surah Ash-Shu'ara, verse 80)

The Holy Quran has been sent to that believers can receive a “cure” from it. “We reveal the Quran which is a cure and mercy for the believers but does nothing for the unjust except to lead them to perdition.” (Surah Al-Isra, verse 82)

There are different recommendations in the Quran about maintaining health, for instance: “eat and drink but do not be excessive.” (Surah Al-A'raf, verse 31)

And this eating and drinking should be halal and clean so as to preserve one’s health: “(People), consume the pure and lawful sustenance which God has given to you and thank God for his bounty if you are His true worshippers.” (Surah An-Nahl, verse 114)

There are different viewpoints about the number of meals that individuals should eat every day. Some people eat two meals and some others more than that. The Quran recommends us to eat two meals, one in the morning and one in the evening: “they will receive their sustenance both in the mornings and evenings.” (Surah Maryam, verse 62)

The Quran points to the need to use all the divine mercies such as animals, fish, fruits, and vegetables: “It is lawful for you to hunt from the sea and to eat seafood.” (Surah Al-Ma'idah, verse 96)

Paying attention to what one eats has also been discussed in the Quran: “Let the human reflect on the food he eats.” (Surah Abasa, verse 24)

There are also other verses about the quality of meals and the manner of eating adhering to which can maintain one’s health.
