TEHRAN (IQNA) – God has sent 124,000 messengers to guide human beings in different periods in history, according to Hadiths.

Prophets Named in Quran

The first prophet was Adam (AS) and the last one was Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). As for the others, only a few of the prophets have been named in the Holy Quran.

There are different opinions about the number of prophets whose names have been mentioned in the Quran. Some refer to 25, some to 26 and some to more names.

The reason for the different opinions is because there is no certainty about whether some of the names mentioned in the Quran are prophets or historical figures.

The 25 messengers of God whose names are in the Quran are as follows: 1- Adam, 2- Idris, 3- Noah (Nuh), 4- Hud, 5- Salih, 6- Lut (Lot), 7- Ibrahim (Abraham), 8- Ismail (Ishmael) 9- Ishaq (Isaac), 10- Yaqub (Jacob), 11- Yusuf (Joseph) 12- Ayub (Job), 13- Yunus (Jonah), 14- Shuaib, 15- Musa (Moses), 16- Harun (Aaron), 17- Davoud (David), 18- Sulaiman (Solomon), 19- Ilyas (Elijah), 20- Al-Yasaa, 21- Dhu al-Kifl, 22- Zakariya (Zechariah), 23- Yahya (John), 24- Issa (Jesus), 25- Muhammad (PBUH)

Those Quran interpreters who believe there are the names of 26 prophets in the Quran add the name Uzair to the list. His name is mentioned in verse 30 of Surah At-Tawbah.

He lived during the reign of the Achaemenid Empire in Persia. Some interpreters says verse 259 of Surah Al-Baqarah is also about him. Some like Allameh Tabatabaei, though, believe that he was not a prophet.

On the other hand, some interpreters of the Quran consider Luqman or Talut to also be messengers of God.

Talut was a grandchild of Benjamin, one of Hazrat Yaqub’s sons. During the prophethood of Sham’un or Ishmueil, the Bani Israil asked him to choose a king for them so that they could unite under his command to fight the enemy. Ishmueil, ordered by God, selected Talut. “Their Prophet said to them: ‘Allah has raised Saul to be your king.’ But they replied: ‘Should he be given the kingship over us, when we are more deserving of it than he and he has not been given abundant wealth?’ He said: ‘Allah has chosen him over you and increased him with amplitude in knowledge and body. Allah gives His kingship to whom He will. Allah is the Embracer, the Knower.’” (Surah Al-Baqarah, Verse 247)

Luqman was a thinker and wise man who is considered by some to have been a prophet of God. He was known for his politeness and his moral virtues. Some say he was from Aad, an ancient tribe mentioned frequently in the Quran, while others say he belonged to Bani Israil.

There are also some prophets who have been talked about in the Quran but there is no mention of their names in the Holy Book, such as Ishmueil, Yushaa and Khizr.
