The truce, mediated by Egypt, ended 48 days of relentless Israeli airstrikes and artillery shelling that killed at least 14,854 Palestinians, including 6,150 children and over 4,000 women, according to health authorities in the Gaza Strip. Israel also targeted and destroyed thousands of homes, schools, hospitals, mosques, and infrastructure, leaving more than 100,000 people homeless and the entire population without electricity and water.
Palestinians inspecting the damage in their areas expressed shock and grief at the scale of the destruction, as they searched for their belongings and the remains of their loved ones.
