IQNA – Islamic Relief, a faith-inspired humanitarian and development agency working to save and transform the lives of some of the world's most vulnerable people, slammed the UN Security Council’s failure to pass a resolution demanding a humanitarian ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

It is shameful that the UN Security Council has once again failed to agree action to stop the massacre in the Gaza Strip, it said in a statement.

“The death toll is rising by the hour. Nowhere is safe as civilians are attacked relentlessly. Lifesaving humanitarian aid is blocked and we are facing a nightmare scenario of starvation and mass disease outbreaks,” it added.

“International law is being trampled over in full view of world leaders, and international governments are complicit by allowing this suffering to continue unabated.

“There must be a ceasefire and an end to the siege of Gaza. Every delay costs many more civilian lives,” Islamic Relief added.

The US on Friday vetoed the UNSC’s demand for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in the Israeli regime’s war against the Gaza Strip.

Thirteen Security Council members voted in favor of a brief draft resolution, put forward by the United Arab Emirates on Friday, while the United Kingdom abstained.

The vote came after UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres made a rare move on Wednesday to formally warn the 15-member council of a global threat from the two-month-long war. He also invoked Article 99 of the UN Charter, which allows the secretary-general to “bring to the attention of the Security Council any matter which in his opinion may threaten the maintenance of international peace and security”.
