Egypt Allocates Some 85 Million Pounds for Repair, Renovation of Mosques

IQNA – The Awqaf ministry in Egypt has earmarked an 86-million-pound budget for repairing and renovating mosques.

It has also drawn up a plan for renovation projects, Awqaf Minister Mohamed Mukhtar Gomaa said.

The money will also be spent for the development of some of the mosques in the country, the minister said.

Gomaa also noted that the Awqaf ministry has approved a 2-million-pound budget for the country’s Association of Quran Reciters.

This aims to help improve the living conditions of the members of the association, he stated.

Projects for repair and renovation of mosques have received much attention from the government of Egypt in recent years.

The government portrays them as signifying its support for Islamic and religious activities but there is also a lot of criticism.

Critics say these pans are implemented without paying due attention to historical features of the buildings.

They also criticize religious institutions for turning a blind eye to the widespread government corruption and the repression of political freedoms in Egypt.
