Addressing a conference at Imam Hussein (AS) University in Tehran on Sunday, Major General Yahya Rahim Safavi said the Sacred Defense (the 1980-88 war imposed by Iraq on Iran) served as a model for resistance movements in Lebanon, Gaza and Yemen.
“Where did the people of Gaza learn resistance and steadfastness?” he said. “Two million inhabitants of the Gaza Strip refused to leave their land after 15 months of (Israeli) war crimes… They learned this resistance from our nation.”
Hailing the leadership of Imam Khomeini (RA) and the contribution of people during the Sacred Defense, Major General Safavi said that between 2.5 to 3 million Iranians fought in the war against the Baathist regime of Saddam Hussein.
There were 200,000 martyrs and more than 500,000 wounded in the war, he noted.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the general said the enemies today seek to weaken the resistance front and undermine Iran’s strategic ties with China and Russia in international organizations such as BRICS, Shanghai Cooperation Organization, and Eurasian Economic Union.
He said the new strategies of the enemies should be properly studied in order to create the country’s strategy at the national, regional and global levels.
