IQNA – A forum on “Materialism and Mindset of Acquiring Wealth Quickly from the Perspective of the Quran” was held in Tehran on Tuesday.

Mindset of Acquiring Wealth Quickly

It was organized by the “Islamic Seminaries International Complex” booth at the 32nd Tehran International Holy Quran Exhibition.

Nigerian cleric Hojat-ol-Islam Sheikh Abdul Qader Zikrallah addressed the forum, saying the opening verses of Surah At-Takathur are among the verses of the Holy Quran that talk about materialism.

These verses refer to tribal behaviors in which individuals consider any form of excess in their quest for superiority, even if that excess involves the dead and deceased of a person or group, he noted.

Materialism, as a mindset in which society and individuals view the pursuit of more and more as their ultimate goal, has numerous consequences, he stated.

“One of these is the erosion of moral values, as the focus on abundance overshadows other noble human objectives, leading in some cases to the abandonment of these ideals in the quest for greater accumulation.”

The cleric added that the pursuit of Halal (religiously lawful) earnings is an essential principle that Muslims must uphold.

“The spread of materialism, on the other hand, will create contradictions with this Islamic framework, ultimately leading to the cessation of unlawful practices. Helping one another and showing goodwill are also fundamental moral principles in Islam.”

Zikrallah said that materialism, due to its inherent greed and insatiable appetite, initially restricts this moral principle and, if it becomes widespread, can lead to the eradication of such virtues in society.

In general, Takathur, the promotion of the idea of becoming wealthy overnight, and materialism present numerous contradictions with Islamic teachings, he went on to say.

He added that the Holy Quran offers solutions to counter these attitudes.

“These solutions include paying zakat as a means to prevent the accumulation of wealth, promoting Islamic banking which explicitly prohibits usury, addressing the notion of instant wealth by emphasizing patience, and encouraging contentment as a way to manage desires and prevent the emergence of materialism.”

The 32nd edition of the Tehran International Holy Quran Exhibition is underway at the Imam Khomeini (RA) Mosalla until March 16, 2025.
