Iranian-Style Tarteel Recitation Unveiled at Tehran Int’l Quran Exhibition

The work, performed by Iranian qari Mohsen Yar-Ahmadi, marks the first time the entire Quran has been recited in this distinctive Iranian style.

Following a brief recitation of several verses, YarAhmadi shared the background of the project. “It all began in 2019 during a specialized session at the Supreme Council of Quran,” he said. “I was asked to conduct research on tarteel.”

He explained that the research showed that most Islamic countries have developed their own unique styles of Quranic recitation, reflecting local melodies and cultural traditions. “With Iran’s rich history in music and diverse vocal traditions, it became clear that we also needed to create an Iranian style of Quranic recitation,” YarAhmadi added.

He noted that encouragement from an Egyptian scholar helped initiate the project. “Eventually, after overcoming many challenges, we succeeded in producing the first full Tarteel recitation of the Quran in the Iranian style,” he said.

Yar-Ahmadi pointed out that the recitation draws on classical Iranian musical modes and authentic vocal techniques. “There were many difficulties along the way,” he remarked, “but with divine assistance, we were able to complete this effort.”

The event concluded with the official unveiling of the project, attended by Hojat-ol-Islam Hamid Reza Arbab Soleimani, the exhibition’s director and deputy for Quran and Etrat at Iran’s Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance, along with other national Quranic officials.

After running for 12 days, the exhibition will wrap up today.

This year’s exhibition features a variety of programs, including specialized sessions, educational workshops, Quranic gatherings, and special activities for children and teenagers.
