In a phone call on Wednesday, Al-Tayeb, congratulated Pope Leo XIV on his election as new head of the Catholic Church.
He wished the new pope success in fulfilling his spiritual and human mission at this critical juncture in world history.
Al-Tayeb stressed the importance of continuing the dialogue between Al-Azhar and the Catholic Church and promoting the principles of human brotherhood and interfaith understanding.
He added that cooperation between the two religious institutions is a fundamental pillar in supporting the values of peaceful coexistence and rejecting hatred and extremism.
During the call, the two sides also discussed current international issues and called for increased efforts to end wars and conflicts that have divided the world, especially the Israeli regime’s genocidal war in Gaza and the conflicts in Ukraine and Sudan.
They emphasized that the innocent and vulnerable victims of these conflicts deserve humanitarian support and justice.

The two sides also emphasized the need for the great religious institutions to unite to spread a culture of just peace and to support the aspirations of the poor and oppressed around the world, based on the moral and spiritual role that religions should play in the service of humanity.
Pope Leo XIV, who was elected earlier this month, is the first American to lead the Catholic Church in its 2,000-year history. Originally from Chicago, the 69-year-old spent much of his clerical life serving in Peru before heading the Vatican’s influential Dicastery for Bishops.
