Karbala Has A Special Place in Everyone’s Heart: UN Envoy

IQNA – The UN secretary-general’s representative said the holy city of Karbala in Iraq has a special place in everyone’s heart.

Governor of Karbala Nasayf Jassim Al-Khattabi and Mohamed Al-Hassan, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Iraq met in Karbala on July 5, 2025.

 

The Governorate of Karbala released a statement announcing that Nasayf Jassim Al-Khattabi, Governor of Karbala, on Saturday hosted Mohamed Al-Hassan, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Iraq.

The two discussed prospects for joint cooperation between the governorate and United Nations agencies.

According to the statement, the Governor of Karbala praised the humanitarian role of the UN mission in Iraq and emphasized the willingness of Karbala’s authorities to collaborate with international organizations to enhance the governorate’s status and serve its citizens.

The statement noted that during the meeting,  al-Khattabi provided a brief overview of Karbala’s religious and political significance, its central role in hosting millions of pilgrims annually, and the governorate’s notable efforts to improve services, infrastructure, and other vital sectors.

The UN secretary-general’s representative, who toured various parts of the governorate, described Karbala as a great city “with a special place in everyone’s hearts”.

During the days leading to Ashura, the tenth day of the lunar Hijri month of Muharram that marks the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS), Karbala has seen the arrival of a large number of pilgrims visiting the holy city to take part in Muharram mourning rituals.
