Ayatollah Sistani’s Office Issues Statement on His Stance on Iraqi Elections

IQNA – The office of Iraq’s top Shia cleric Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani issued a statement on reports about the senior cleric’s stance regarding the upcoming parliamentary elections in Iraq.

The statement denied any official position taken by Ayatollah Sistani on the 2025 parliamentary elections, Baghdad Today reported.

The office also emphasized that it has not issued any statement or directive in this regard.

It came after a message attributed to Ayatollah Sistani’s office was published on social media, stating that participation in the elections would be left to the discretion of Iraqi citizens.

Iraq’s parliamentary elections, the sixth since the fall of Saddam Hussein, are scheduled to be held on November 11.

Campaigning has kicked off in the Arab country for the polls.

Over 7,000 candidates are running for the 329-seat legislature against a backdrop of disputes, strained relations and regional turbulence.

Over 21 million people are eligible to vote.
