TEHRAN (IQNA) – A number of Shia pilgrims, including several Iranians, were martyred in a terrorist blast in the Iraqi holy city of Samarra on Sunday.

A car bomb went off at a bus terminal for Shia pilgrims visiting al-Askari Mosque in the vicinity of a hospital in Samarra, located some 50 kilometers south of Tikrit, al-Alam news network reported.

Security forces imposed a curfew in the city after the attack.

Earlier in the day, a bomber set off his explosives at a checkpoint in the south of the city of Tikrit, capital of Salahuddin province.

According to media reports, at least 11 people were killed and several others injured in the two blasts.

The new wave of terror attacks come amid a surge in terror activities by Daesh (ISIL or ISIS), which has been taking severe blows from Iraqi forces in the last remaining areas under its control.

The Iraqi army and allied forces have launched an ultimate push to retake the northern city of Mosul, the last stronghold of the Takfiri Daesh terror group.
