TEHRAN (IQNA) – Egypt’s Awqaf minster said his ministry will not allow extremists groups to set up Quran memorization centers.

Speaking during a visit to the northeastern Suez Governorate, Mohamed Mokhtar Gomaa said after individuals affiliated to radical groups were banned from activity in mosques, they have sought to use kindergartens and Quran memorization centers to influence kids.

Only Quran memorization centers that have permission from the Awqaf ministry can operate and Quranic centers outside this framework will never be allowed to be established, he added.

Elsewhere, Gomaa referred to the Quranic schools in the country, saying the Awqaf ministry launched 764 such schools last year and plans to raise the number to 1,500.

By radicals and extremists, Gomaa seems to be referring to the Muslim Brotherhood.

The administration of President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has outlawed the Brotherhood organization, which is Egypt’s oldest opposition movement. The group operated under strict measures during the rule of longtime dictator Hosni Mubarak, who was himself removed from power following an uprising in 2011.
