TEHRAN (IQNA) – Algeria’s Religious Affairs Ministry said Adhan (call to prayers) will be broadcast by loudspeakers in mosques to promote a spiritual atmosphere and calms amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The ministry said in a statement that before noon prayers very day, Adhan recitation will be played in mosques via loudspeakers for half an hour, Al Jazeera reported.

The decision was made at the request of the citizens and its implementation will begin on Tuesday, the ministry said.

The Algerian government on March 17 banned holding mass prayers, including Friday prayers, in all mosques in the country.

The coronavirus pandemic has sickened more than 1.3 million people worldwide, according to official counts. As of Tuesday morning, at least 74,000 people have died of the disease.

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) plans to hold an extraordinary meeting on Thursday to discuss the fight against COVID-19.

The challenges Muslim countries are facing in countering the infectious disease will be the main theme of the event.
