TEHRAN (IQNA) – A Quran competition was held on the occasion of Eid al-Ghadir with the participation of more than 100 qaris from across Iraq.

The Astan (custodianship) of Imam Ali’s (AS) holy shrine in Najaf organized the Quranic event as part of programs for the auspicious occasion.  

The Hazrat Zahra (SA) Courtyard of the mausoleum hosted the competition on Thursday and Friday.

A specialized committee comprising Quran experts supervise the contest, according to the website of the Astan.

Amir Kasar, head of the Astan’s Dar-ol-Quran said each governorate of Iraq was represented in the competition by four or five Quran reciter.

He said it was aimed at promoting Quranic activities and encouraging the contenders to enhance their Quranic skills.

The top winner is given the opportunity to recite the Quran and Adhan (call to prayer) at the golden minaret of the mausoleum, he added.

The event of Ghadir, or Eid al-Ghadir, is celebrated by Shia Muslims around the world every year. It is among important feasts and happy holidays of Shia Muslims held on the 18th day of Dhul Hijjah in the lunar Hijri calendar.

It was the day when according to reports, the Holy Prophet (PBUH) appointed Ali ibn Abi Talib (AS) as his caliph and the Imam after himself following an order from God.

This year’s Eid al-Ghadir was celebrated on July 18.
