TEHRAN (IQNA) – Iraq’s senior Shia cleric Ayatollah Seyed Ali al-Sistani has urged the international community and Muslims across the globe to show support for the “suffering” people in Afghanistan.

He made the remarks in a Tuesday meeting in his Najaf-based office with a visiting delegation of the Shia Ulema (scholars) Council of Afghanistan, Noon news agency reported.

Referring to crimes and oppression that Afghan people, especially women, are facing, he expressed regret for what these people have gone through in the past few decades.

“Muslims and the international community should not leave Afghan people alone under such circumstances and should not spare any effort to alleviate their sufferings,” Ayatollah Sistani stressed.

He also pointed to the importance of maintaining national unity and peaceful coexistence in Afghanistan.

“One should avoid violence in dealing with current rulers of Afghanistan,” he noted.

He called on the Shia council to do “whatever they can” to secure the rights of the Afghan nation.

Members of the council, for their part, briefed the Shia Marja on the situation in Afghanistan and the measures implemented by the council.
