Sheikh Ahmed bin Hamad Al Khalili, the Grand Mufti of Oman, has called on Muslims to boycott Swedish products because of the burning of the Holy Qur’an publicly on the day of Eid Al- Adha.
“Sweden has undertaken the greatest challenge to the entire Islamic nation, which is to allow one of its fools to burn the Holy Qur’an publicly on the day of Eid Al-Adha, while protecting him with security men,” he wrote on Twitter.
“The least that should be taken in the face of this great crime is to boycott it (Sweden) completely by refusing to buy any of its products, with the withdrawal of all financial transactions that take place between this country and any Islamic party, whether it is a government, an institution, or an individual of Muslims,” the Grand Mufti added.
A 37-year-old Iraqi man desecrated the Quran by torching some of its pages outside Stockholm Central Mosque on Wednesday. The Swedish police allowed and guarded the act of disrespect to the Muslim holy book.
The incident, which happened during the Muslim Eid al-Adha and the conclusion of the annual hajj to Mecca in Saudi Arabia, was widely condemned by Muslims worldwide.
On Friday, for the second consecutive day, thousands of Iraqis rallied near the Swedish embassy in Baghdad to denounce the Quran burning. A day earlier, angry protestors briefly stormed the embassy.
The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has called for an urgent meeting of its executive committee to deal with the repercussions of the blasphemous act.
