Gaza Islamic University Rector, Family Killed in Israeli Airstrike

AL-QUDS (IQNA) – The Rector of the Islamic University in Gaza, Sufyan Tayeh, and his family were killed in an Israeli airstrike on Saturday, an official confirmed.

Tayeh, a researcher in physics and applied mathematics, was killed along with his wife and three children in their home in the Al-Faluja area in Jabalia, in the northeastern Gaza Strip.

The Education Minister Mahmoud Abu Mouis mourned the death of Tayeh and his family in a statement.

"Academician and President of the Islamic University Dr. Sufian Tayeh and his family were martyred today as a result of (an Israeli) occupation airstrike on the Faluja area in Gaza," Education Minister Mahmoud Abu Mouis said in a statement.

According to the Quds News Network, Tayeh was ranked among the top 2% of the best researchers in the world in 2021.

Tayeh, who was born in 1971 in northern Gaza, was the Rector of the Islamic University since 2019.

The death toll from Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip has risen to 15,207 since the conflict erupted on Oct. 7, the Gaza Ministry of Health said Saturday.

The Israeli military resumed its bombing campaign on Gaza early Friday, after a week-long truce collapsed with refusal of the occupation regime to accept prisoner exchange offers with Hamas.

The Gaza Health Ministry said that at least 193 Palestinians have been killed and 652 injured since Friday in Israeli airstrikes.

Israel launched its air and ground assault on Gaza after a cross-border attack by Hamas which the group said was a response to Israeli violence against Palestinians.
