Hosted at the University of York's Borthwick Centre for Archives, the exhibition showcases a diverse collection of ceramics, paintings, artifacts, and photographs.

This exhibition serves as the inaugural event for the university's newly launched master's degree program in Islamic art and culture.

The artifacts on display, ranging from the 9th to the 19th centuries, originate from regions governed by Muslim dynasties, stretching from Spain in the west to India in the east.

Visitors can expect to encounter remarkable items, including intricate works of calligraphy and vibrantly colored ceramic fragments.

The exhibition, curated by Dr. Richard McClary from the Department of History of Art and Helena Cox, is organized around three main themes.

“The collection allows students, and now the wider public, to see the true scale, colour and intricacies of these unique artifacts for themselves,” Dr. McClary said.

“My love of Islamic art and architecture started when I visited Istanbul with my dad as a teenager. I had never seen anything like the huge, open, light-filled space in the great Ottoman mosques. I hope this exhibition can give visitors a sense of the wonders of art in the Islamic world,” York Press quoted him as saying.

Open to the public from Monday to Friday between 10 am and 4 pm, the exhibition provides a unique opportunity to explore and appreciate various aspects of Islamic art until June 2024.
