IQNA – A Conservative MP who was suspended for making Islamophobic comments about London's mayor has received a “standing ovation” at a party fundraiser.

Lee Anderson, who accused Sadiq Khan of being "controlled by Islamists" on GB News, joined former prime minister Liz Truss at the event for another MP's reelection bid, according to MailOnline.

Anderson, who has not apologized for his remarks, was greeted with a standing ovation by the attendees, despite the growing divisions within the party under Rishi Sunak's leadership.

The incident comes as a results of a new poll in the UK shows that most of the members of the Conservative Party consider Islam a threat to what they describe as the British way of life.

The Opinium poll surveyed 521 members of the country’s ruling party about the UK’s second-largest religion, The Guardian reported on Wednesday.

Compared to the overall population, respondents were twice as likely to view Islam as a threat to the British way of life, with 58 percent agreeing with the statement.

Just over half of respondents — 52 percent — believe the false claim that sections of European cities are subject to Shariah law and are effectively “no-go zones” for non-Muslims.
