Funerals Held in Pakistan for 28 Shia Pilgrims Killed in Iran Bus Crash

IQNA – Hundreds of mourners in southern Pakistan attended funerals for 28 Shia pilgrims who died in a bus crash in Iran this week while en route to Iraq, according to community leaders and officials.

The victims were buried in various graveyards across Sindh province, as confirmed by local Shia leader Jaafar Hussain, AP reported on Saturday.

The funerals took place shortly after a military aircraft, following orders from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, transported the bodies and injured back to Pakistan. All victims were from Sindh province.

The crash occurred near the city of Taft, Yazd Province, approximately 500 kilometers southeast of Tehran.

The pilgrims were traveling to the holy city of Karbala in Iraq for the Arbaeen pilgrimage.

Preliminary investigations by traffic police in Yazd suggest a technical defect in the vehicle’s braking system caused the accident.
