IQNA – An artificial intelligence researcher outlined the technology’s potential to serve as a reliable assistant for teaching and innovating in the art of Quran recitation.

Learning the Quran

Ali Mehrabi, a university lecturer and AI expert, presented his findings at a specialized session of Iran’s Supreme Quran Council on Wednesday.

He argued that AI’s data-processing capabilities can significantly aid Quran masters and students.

“The facilities and capacities that AI data provides to Quran activists and teachers have turned it into a reliable assistant in various aspects of recitation,” Mehrabi said.

His presentation, titled “Foundations and Components of Innovation in the Recitation of Iranian Qaris Using Artificial Intelligence”, connected the technology to a broader push for creative expression.

Mehrabi introduced an AI system developed by his research group, “Nokte”, which includes a feature named “Iqra” designed as an AI teaching assistant. This tool, he explained, can accelerate the learning process, particularly in areas of vocalization and melody.

“AI, with its mastery over not only words, sound, and melody but also interpretation and translation of verses, can guide and assist the qari and teacher in various performance styles," Mehrabi stated.

The technology’s applications extend to competition judgement, Mehrabi said, noting that while a human judge might miss details after focusing on one error, AI can identify the smallest imperfections, providing a more comprehensive technical analysis for scoring.

Meanwhile, he was careful to frame AI as a supportive tool, not a replacement for human artistry. “AI is merely a good assistant in improving the recitation process and enhancing its qualified, expert-reviewed dimension,” Mehrabi said. He explained that the technology can help a novice reciter choose a suitable historical style to emulate by analyzing their voice type and vocal structure.

Furthermore, AI can foster creativity. By generating countless combinations of established melodic patterns, it can give new reciters the confidence to innovate. “The qari, especially at the beginning of the path of innovation, finds the courage and boldness to strive for innovation and contribute their own share,” Mehrabi stated.

The system also allows students to record their practice sessions for detailed AI analysis, comparing their recitation against technically standard examples to correct mistakes more quickly, he said.

Mehrabi concluded by highlighting a project to create a digital archive of the world’s most famous recitations, searchable by theme rather than just by verse. He expressed hope for collaboration with the Supreme Quran Council to make this resource publicly available to teachers.

“We have always strived to have an AI with an Iranian nature, born from Iranian culture, and today this wish is achievable,” he said. “With the efforts of masters and experts, this system will be perfected day by day.”
