An Algerian Scholar Whose Quran Translation Introduced Islam to French-Speaking World
He is also the first Arab who translated the Quran into the French language.
He was born on October 10, 1889, in a village in Laghouat province of Algeria. He went to a Quranic school and started memorizing the Quran there at an early age.
He then went to a French school in Algeria. Ahmed managed to obtain two MA degrees, one in 1913 and the other in 1916.
Then he began teaching and also worked as a legal consultant.
Ahmed also wrote many books and articles in the fields of religion, philosophy and history and translated a number of important Islamic books into the French language.
His main work was the translation of the Quran into French as the first Arab to do so.
He had a mastery of Islamic culture and teachings and was interested in promoting Islamic thought. He was also fluent in French. That is why he embarked on translating the Holy Book into French.
He began the rendering in 1926 and published it in 1931 under the title “Le Coran”.
Since its publication, his Quran translation has been a major reference for Muslim scholars and researchers.
His main aim in translating the Quran into French was to promote Islam, as he considered it important to use foreign languages to spread Islam and the teachings of the Holy Prophet (PBUH).
