Ceremony Honors 600 Hijab-Wearing Palestinian Girls at Al-Aqsa Mosque
The ceremony took place on Saturday, organized by the Palestinian Muslim Women's Foundation for the second consecutive year.
The event celebrated over 600 girls who have chosen to wear the hijab.
Naseeba Issa, director of the foundation, told Al Jazeera that the ceremony, titled "My Hijab, My Identity," was held to recognize the girls’ decision to wear the hijab.
She also noted that this year's event included girls who had started wearing the hijab since last year.
She highlighted that despite ongoing challenges, interest in attending Al-Aqsa Mosque is growing.
Participants expressed their happiness about both choosing to wear the hijab and being honored at the sacred site.
The ceremony comes as the Israeli forces and settlers have been increasingly storming Al-Aqsa Mosque, which is Islam’s third-holiest site, since October last year.
Palestinian authorities and resistance groups have warned of the Israeli regime’s plans to change the status quo of the mosque.
The al-Aqsa Mosque compound, which sits just above the Western Wall plaza, houses both the Dome of the Rock and the al-Aqsa Mosque.
