The photograph was allegedly taken in Jabalia, northern Gaza, during the Israeli regime’s month-long siege of the area amid heavy bombardment and a ground attack.
The image, reportedly published on a private Instagram account belonging to a soldier from the Givati Brigade 435 Rotem Battalion, was time-stamped October 22, 2024, at 5:41 PM.
The incident has fueled outrage online, with social media users drawing comparisons to hypothetical scenarios involving other religious texts, highlighting the lack of widespread condemnation in this case.
“If someone posted a photo [desecrating] a Torah scroll, there would rightfully be widespread condemnation. But when Israeli soldiers post photos [desecrating] a Quran and mosques, there’s no condemnation, just more praise for them as the most moral army in the world,” one user wrote, according to The New Arab.
Pro-Palestinian activists have documented several incidents of desecration by Israeli soldiers, including throwing pages of the Quran into fires.

In May, Israeli broadcaster Kan reported on an incident where a soldier burned a Quran amid the ruins of a mosque in Gaza.
The desecration of religious sites and symbols contravenes Article 27 of the 1907 Hague Convention, which requires militaries to “spare, as far as possible, buildings dedicated to religion.” However, Israeli forces continue destruction of religious and cultural sites in Gaza and beyond.
Since the start of the Israeli aggression in October last year, at least 43,922 Palestinians have been killed and 103,898 injured in Gaza, while 3,481 people have been killed and 14,786 injured in Lebanon.
