IQNA – Morocco is planning to translate the interpretations of the Quran into the Amazigh language.

Amazigh has been an official language in Morocco since 2011.

Minister of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs is considering the plan. Minister Ahmed Toufiq revealed that his department was studying the possibility of including this project in the qualification of mosque imams, as part of the ulemas (scholars) charter project, under the supervision of Amazigh-speaking religious officials, in coordination with the general secretariat of the Higher Council of Ulema.

This statement was made in response to a written question on “activating the official character of the Amazigh language in the Islamic Affairs sector”, submitted by the representative of the Popular Movement parliamentary group.

Ahmed Toufiq added that the implementation of the integrated governmental plan to activate the official character of the Amazigh language and integrate it into the administration included a set of measures and procedures to enhance the use of this language and facilitate access for its speakers to the services provided by the ministry.

Among the most important of these measures is the inventory of the number of legal executives trained in the Amazigh language, and the preparation of their training and knowledge.

In this respect, a meeting was held with the management of the Institut Royal de la Culture Amazighe (IRCAM) to determine the modalities for implementing the above-mentioned procedure, said the minister.
