UN Envoy Highlights Ayatollah Sistani’s Role in Iraq, Region

IQNA – The UN Secretary General’s Special Representative for Iraq underlined the fundamental role of Iraq’s top Shia cleric in resolving issues in the Arab country and the region.

Mohamed al-Hassan was speaking at a press conference in the southern governorate of Basra, according to Middle East News. 

The authority of Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani is considered a global authority, he stated.

“I went to meet the esteemed religious authority. He is not only a religious authority in Iraq but also a global figure, and I have never heard anyone diminish his standing,” al-Hassan said.

“When I met with Ayatollah Sistani, I realized that the role of the religious authority is fundamental to the (efforts to resolve issues) in this country and the entire region.”

He also said that as a member state of the United Nations, Iraq is a partner that cannot be overlooked.

Al-Hassan expressed hope that the Iraqi government would be able to restore the country to its international standing in the region.
