After Asma Falaki, an honorary qari, recited verses from the Holy Quran, the contenders began taking to the stage based on their turns.
Zaynab Abdul Rahman from Ghana (memorization of entire Quran), Masoumeh Mohammadi from Afghanistan (Tarteel), Ifnan Rashad Ali Yaqub from Yemen (memorization), Jamliaya Abdulqadir from the Philippines (Tarteel), Hana Ali Mirafi from Nigeria (memorization), Hura Haydar Hamzi from Lebanon (Tarteel) and Karima Haj Brahim from Thailand (Tarteel) were the contenders in the women section on the first day of the finals.
The morning session concluded with Quran recitation by another honorary qari, Marziyeh Mirzaeipour.
The competitions in the men section take place in the afternoon sessions.
Quran reciters and memorizers from 144 countries took part in the preliminary round of the contest and from among them, representatives of 27 countries have made it to the finals in the two sections.
The finals, underway in the northeastern hoy city of Mashhad, will wrap up in a closing ceremony where top winners will be named and awarded.
