The Quds Hall of the holy mausoleum of Imam Reza (AS) hosted the event, which was attended by a number of senior political, Quranic, and religious officials, as well as the contestants and members of the panels of judges.
It began with recitation of verses from the Holy Quran by Iranian qari Hadi Esfidani, the winner of the recitation category in the previous edition of the contest.
Addressing the ceremony, Head of the Awqaf and Charity Affairs Organization Hojat-ol-Islam Seyed Mehdi Khamouhi welcomed the guests present at the ceremony.
He said, “We are grateful to God that this gathering is taking place beside (the holy shrine of) Imam Reza (AS) in the holy city of Mashhad.”
He referred to the motto of this year’s competition, namely “Quran; Only Guide to Perfection”, and said this slogan highlights the status of the Quran as the book that guides humanity to perfection.
Hojat-ol-Islam Khamouhi also gave a report on the organization of the contest, saying that Quran reciters and memorizers from 144 countries took part in the preliminary round and from among them, representatives of 27 countries have made it to the finals.

A total of 59 contenders will vie for top prizes in the final stage, he noted.
The official further thanked the governor of Razavi Khorasan Province, the custodian of the holy shrine of Imam Reza (AS) and the media for their cooperation and contributions.
The competition will conclude on Friday in a closing ceremony where top winners will be named and awarded.
The International Holy Quran Competition of the Islamic Republic of Iran is annually organized by the country’s Awqaf and Charity Affairs Organization.
It aims to promote the Quranic culture and values among Muslims and showcase the talents of Quran reciters and memorizers.
