IQNA – An Illinois landlord has been found guilty of murder and a hate crime for the brutal killing of a 6-year-old Palestinian American boy and the attempted murder of his mother, a verdict that underscores rising anti-Muslim violence in the US.

A jury convicted 73-year-old Joseph M. Czuba on Friday of first-degree murder, attempted murder, aggravated battery, and committing a hate crime. He faces life in prison without parole, with sentencing set for May.

The attack occurred on October 14, 2023, just a week after the start of a war between Hamas and the Israeli regime.

Czuba, a landlord in Will County near Chicago, stabbed Wadea Alfayoumi 26 times with a military-style knife inside the home the family rented from him. Wadea’s mother, Hanaan Shaheen, suffered severe stab wounds but survived.

Authorities said the attack was motivated by Czuba’s hatred of Muslims, exacerbated by inflammatory rhetoric echoed by American officials and Western media.

Johnny Simon, an attorney for Wadea’s family, welcomed the verdict, calling it a strong message that "hate-driven violence against minorities will not stand."

However, Wadea’s father, Odai Alfayoumi, expressed mixed emotions, saying, "Maybe if I were one of you, I would be smiling, but I have lost my child, and this decision feels too little, too late."

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) also reacted to the verdict, stating, "Islamophobia kills," and attributing the attack to "the dehumanization of Palestinians by political leaders and the media."

Prosecutors revealed that Czuba had expressed fears of Muslims and had been influenced by anti-Muslim rhetoric on conservative talk radio. Investigators are now considering whether media figures who spread such narratives could bear legal responsibility.
