Prominent Qari Stresses Voice, Technique, Melody as Keys to Effective Recitation

Ahmad Abolghasemi, an internationally recognized Iranian Quran reciter, shared his insights during a workshop held on Sunday, June 8, in Qom.

“Movement and rhythm in words are fundamental in both Quran recitation and religious chanting,” Abolghasemi said. “Each word must have proper accentuation to preserve its emotional impact.”

He noted that long words should include at least one strong vocal point to avoid monotony. “Overusing the same notes can tire listeners,” he added. “So melodic variety is crucial.”

Emphasizing voice exercises as vital, he recommended slow-paced recitation and sustained notes to improve control. “Shifting between maqams, such as Hijaz, and expanding the melody range can enhance appeal,” he said.

He also pointed to the importance of harmony between voice and tune, saying, “Even a simple melody becomes powerful with a captivating voice.”

Challenging rigid conventions, Abolghasemi said, “There’s no rule that a recitation must start formally. Great reciters like Abdul Basit sometimes began with fast, engaging melodies, while others preferred slower starts. It depends on the moment and feeling.”

He identified three pillars of effective recitation: a strong voice, vocal techniques, and melody. “A good voice with a simple tune can be impactful,” he explained, “but those with weaker voices must work on breathing, vocal control, and melodic variation.”

He further advised regular practice, listening to master reciters, and seeking feedback. “A skilled reciter balances voice, technique, and melody to deliver a beautiful and moving performance,” he said.
