IQNA – A senior Iranian cleric urged the world’s religious leaders to expose US President Donald Trump’s lies about being a follower of Christianity.

The national conference “Divine Religions and the Issue of Zionism and the West's Invasion of Iran” was held in Tehran on Wednesday, July 9, 2025.

Emphasizing that good statements were made by the leaders of Iranian religions and sects, including Christians and Jews, about the recent Israeli and US acts of aggression against Iran, Hojat-ol-Islam Mohammad Hassan Akhtari, the head of the Supreme Council of the Ahl-ul-Bayt (AS) World Assembly said this is not enough.

“Trump considers himself a Christian, and it is necessary for the Pope, Christian leaders, Christian scholars, and other religions to expose this lie and say that he is not a Christian.”

Hojat-ol-Islam Akhtari made the remarks while addressing the national conference “Divine Religions and the Issue of Zionism and the West's Invasion of Iran”, which was held in Tehran on Wednesday by the Research Institute for Islamic Culture and Thought in cooperation with international cultural centers.

He offered condolences on the martyrdom of commanders, scientists, and the people in the recent attacks on Iran by the Zionist regime, adding that the victory of the Iranian people in this 12-day war is a topic worth extensive discussion, carrying broad national, regional, and international dimensions that must be analyzed.

“This gathering has been held so that we can engage in dialogue, find solutions, and not merely talk—only for everyone to return to their own work after the meeting.”

The cleric emphasized the necessity of finding feasible solutions and implementing them, stating “Those present in this conference are leaders of divine religions, each with their own audience and responsible for guiding a segment of religious followers. As religious leaders and wise figures in society, we share many commonalities—common responsibilities toward society, women, youth, and others—requiring us to deliberate and take a stance in this arena.”

Referring to the 12-day war, Hojat-ol-Islam Akhtari stated that “we are responsible for what has happened.”

“The aggression, attack, and invasion by a fake, puppet regime and a Zionist terrorist gang against Iran is no small matter. Additionally, the US government, its politicians, and its filthy, criminal president—who claims to be a member of international organizations, human rights watchdogs, and the Security Council—committed a vile and treacherous crime against Iran. We were members of the NPT, yet this American criminal carried out hostile and inhumane acts against Iran’s nuclear sites.”

He went on to say, “Criminal America had no legal, religious, diplomatic, or political right to attack Iran and can offer no justification. But as religious leaders and followers, what must we do in response to this crime? What must we do to prevent such atrocities from recurring in the future?”

Citing a verse from the Quran, “We will surely question those to whom messengers were sent, and We will question the messengers themselves,” the cleric said, “This verse states that We will hold the messengers We sent accountable, and We will also question the people. This responsibility falls upon all followers of religions, not just Muslims. As the noble Hadith of the Prophet (PBUH) states: ‘Each of you is a shepherd, and each of you is responsible for your flock.’”

Akhtari added, “Obligatory defense of faith, honor, and homeland is not exclusive to Islam. Scholars of all religions and sects consider defending oneself, one’s honor, home, land, and country permissible. This is a divine and rational decree, and we must devise a strategy through interfaith collaboration.”

The head of the Supreme Council of the Ahl-ul-Bayt (AS) World Assembly said, “Good statements have been issued by leaders of Iran’s religions and sects, including Christians, Jews, and others—but this is not enough. Trump claims to be Christian, yet it is necessary for the Pope, Christian leaders, and scholars of other religions to expose this lie and declare that he is not a Christian. Which of Trump’s actions align with the teachings of Jesus Christ (AS) that he dares call himself a Christian?”

He added, “Grand Ayatollah (Ali) al-Sistani and the Sheikh of Al-Azhar have taken a stance against the aggression of Israel and America, strongly condemning it. Christians and Jews have also taken positions, but we must take practical actions and join hands.”

He concluded by saying that religious leaders must strive for UN member states to take a stance that expels America from the United Nations. “America has no right to be in the UN or human rights watchdogs, let alone wield veto power—much less have the audacity (for Trump) to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.”
