IQNA – A forum titled Ma Ra’aytu Illa Jamila (I saw nothing but beauty) was held at the holy shrine of Imam Reza (AS) in Mashhad, northeast Iran, where the speaker highlighted the role of women in the Ashura uprising.

Taghreed Mohammad Jouni, a professor at the Women’s Seminary from Lebanon, addressed a forum titled Ma Ra’aytu Illa Jamila (I saw nothing but beauty) held at the holy shrine of Imam Reza (AS) in Mashhad, northeast Iran, on July 10, 2025.

It was organized by the West Asian Department of the Astan Quds Razavi’s Management of Non-Iranian Pilgrims with the participation of women from Arab countries bordering the Persian Gulf.

Taghreed Mohammad Jouni, a professor at the Women’s Seminary from Lebanon, made the main focus of her speech at the forum the suffering of Ahl-ul-Bayt (AS) after the Ashura incident, the historic speech of Hazrat Zeynab (SA), as well as the insight and resistance of Muslim women following her example.

Women played an effective role in the emotional support and care of children and war survivors, she noted.

Regarding the encouraging and supportive role of women in Karbala, she said, “Abdullah bin Umayr Kalbi was one of the other martyrs of Karbala. After sharing his decision to join the army of Imam Hussein (AS) with his wife, in addition to receiving encouragement from her, he also witnessed his wife’s support on this path.”

Describing the role of women in nursing the fighters, she said, “In addition to healing the wounds of the war-wounded and getting them back on the battlefield, women played a very useful role in providing emotional support and care for children and war survivors.”

Jouni reminded that Hazrat Zeynab (SA) is the most prominent example in nursing and supporting Imam Sajjad (AS) and the children.

“Imam Sajjad (AS) is quoted as saying: ‘After captivity, my aunt could not pray standing for several days due to extreme weakness, because during the journey from Karbala to the Levant, she would give the children the same limited amount of one loaf of bread.”

The Lebanese seminary scholar pointed out that one of the most important reasons for the presence of women in the army of Imam Hussein (AS) was to keep this great epic alive throughout history.

“Women were the messengers and spokespersons of the truth of this epic. This instructive event has reached us through the presence of the women present in Karbala, which can be a lesson and a sermon for humanity until the end of time.”

Women showed their patience and perseverance by accompanying Imam Hussein (AS) and bearing the burden of this heartbreaking event, she stated.

“By bearing the burden of this heartbreaking calamity, sacrificing their husbands and children for the cause of truth, as well as resisting and standing firm against oppression, these women are a very valuable role model for their fellow women throughout history, especially Palestinian mothers.”

Jouni went on to say that this great tragedy for the women of Karbala not only made them more resilient, but also gave them additional strength and a firmer purpose to fight against oppression.

“This resistance to oppression can also be seen in the sermon of Hazrat Zeynab (SA). This noble lady, enduring the pain of losing her brother, children, and relatives, did not show a moment of weakness and stood up against oppression, keeping the message of Karbala alive and clear for the entire world until the Day of Judgment.”

She also said that after the martyrdom of the Imam (AS) and his companions and the Yazidis’ attack on the tents, the women, despite all the humiliation they suffered, never allowed their veil and chastity to be destroyed.

Ashura is full of lessons and admonitions, and every action in this event contains many admonitions, and all the poems present for this event are of great grandeur and non-repetitive, she noted.

“In Karbala, the only goal was to carry out divine commands and fight against oppression in the way of God. Imam Hussein (AS) rose up to implement the enjoining of good and forbidding evil in society, which is a great lesson for today’s world, where many countries remain silent in the face of Israeli crimes and only those who are awake take steps to achieve the rights of the Palestinians.”

Jouni concluded by saying that, “Today, we witness the resistance of Palestinian women against the oppression of the usurping Israeli regime. Despite losing their children, these mothers continue to be patient and not bow down to the enemy. And they continue to nurture the fighters for the cause of God in their laps.”
