Singapore to Distribute Over 8 Tonnes of Ritual Meat to Low-Income Households

Singaporean authorities have launched a nationwide meat distribution drive aimed at supporting low-income households. The initiative involves the distribution of 8,464 kilograms of frozen mutton, donated through this year’s Eid al-Adha ritual, to 4,232 families across 28 constituencies, The Straits Times reported on Sunday.

The first round of distributions began on July 13 at the void deck of Block 12 Eunos Crescent. During the event, Acting Minister-in-Charge of Muslim Affairs Faishal Ibrahim personally handed out packets of frozen meat to 120 residents.

The meat, sourced from Australia, was provided by participants of the 2025 Eid al-Adha. The effort was coordinated by Jamiyah Singapore in collaboration with the People’s Association and various Residents’ Networks.

Eid al-Adha is an Islamic ritual that involves the slaughter of animals such as sheep and lambs during Hajj pilgrimage. The meat is then distributed among worshippers, families, and the less fortunate as an act of worship and charity.

The distribution of 2 kilograms of meat per household will continue across the island throughout July and August.

In a separate initiative, announced earlier, Muslims in Singapore plan to send 16 tonnes of canned sacrificial meat to Gaza as part of a humanitarian effort scheduled for late 2025. The announcement was made by Faishal Ibrahim in late June, who said the donation reflects the community’s commitment to global humanitarian support.

“This initiative represents not just our religious obligations, but also our commitment to supporting communities in crisis,” he said. “It demonstrates how our acts of worship can be channelled to those in need.”
