IQNA – More than 90 Muslim scholars, imams, community leaders, and institutions from the United States and other countries have issued a joint appeal demanding immediate, decisive steps by Muslim-majority governments to end Israel’s ongoing genocide in Gaza.

The signatories argue that Muslim nations—particularly Arab states bordering Palestine—possess the political leverage, legal authority, and moral responsibility to confront Israel’s relentless assault on the besieged enclave.

They outlined measures such as cutting diplomatic, economic, intelligence, and military ties with Israel, halting participation in agreements like the Abraham Accords, and banning the use of their airspace or bases for any Israeli-linked military operations.

“Business as usual in international affairs is simply not working. We believe that the governments of the Muslim-majority nations of the world should not wait for the ‘international community’ to grow a conscience,” the website of the Council on American-Islamic Relations reported on Friday.

The statement added that the killing of a predominantly Muslim population by “an openly racist, anti-Muslim” regime should weigh heavily on the global Muslim community.

The appeal comes as Gaza suffers some of the most devastating attacks in modern history. Since October 7, 2023, Israeli forces have killed over 61,330 Palestinians and injured more than 152,000, with women and children making up the majority of the dead.

The war has pushed the territory to the brink of famine, with 197 people—96 of them children—reported to have died from malnutrition amid Israel’s blockade and restrictions on aid.

Israel’s war cabinet recently approved plans to occupy Gaza City and tighten its military grip on the enclave, even as the International Criminal Court has issued arrest warrants for prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former defense minister Yoav Gallant for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity. The International Court of Justice is also hearing a genocide case against Israel over its campaign in Gaza.

The joint statement urged Muslim governments to take tangible actions, including opening Gaza border crossings like Rafah to allow aid trucks, medics, journalists, and demonstrators through; organizing high-level diplomatic convoys to demand unfettered aid access; and considering embargoes on oil and gas exports that benefit Israel.

Signatories stressed that the fate of Palestine, including the sanctity of Masjid Al-Aqsa, should compel the Muslim world to act immediately, declaring that the current death toll and suffering in Gaza are intolerable and require urgent intervention.

Among the signatories to the letter are the Council on American-Islamic Relations, the Muslim Alliance in North America, the Islamic Society of North America and the US Council of Muslim Organizations.
