Emergency services were called to the scene around 9:50 p.m. after reports of a blaze outside the Peacehaven Mosque, Sussex Police said. Fire crews quickly contained the flames and confirmed that no one was injured.

Footage seen by Sussex News appeared to show a masked individual setting fire to materials placed at the mosque’s entrance. The fire damaged the building’s front door and a nearby car, but firefighters prevented it from spreading to nearby properties.

Police confirmed they are treating the incident as a hate crime.

A spokesperson described it as a “fast-moving investigation” and said officers are conducting additional patrols to reassure local residents and faith communities.

In a section of the police statement, authorities urged anyone with information to come forward, including anyone with “CCTV, Ring doorbell, dashcam, or mobile footage from the area at the time.”

They also acknowledged concerns within the Muslim community and said there would be an increased presence near places of worship across the county.
