- The Ministry of Internal Security through its Publication Control and Al-Quran Texts Division inspected close to four million publications but only 11,777 were seized last year.
Its Director Ervinah Kebahi said the seized publications were seized as the contents could jeopardize morality and public interest.

Also, she said, the publications were found to be in violation of Section 7(1) of the Printing Presses and Publications Act 1984 (Amended 1987) including Section 5(2) for not possessing any publication permits under the Act.

Any individuals or companies bringing in prohibited publications can be punished under Section 8(2) of the same Act that provides for a maximum imprisonment of three years or fines of up to RM20,000 or both, on conviction.

"A total of 682 Quranic texts and materials were also seized last year for violating the Printing Al-Quran Texts Act 1986. Of the number, 551 texts were Yassin verses and 131 Quranic texts that were taken away for various offences under the same Act," she said.

Ervinah said most of the seized Quranic texts like the Yassin had missing verses and had some errors in the Quranic writing system (Tajwid) or were not written correctly.

"The sale of printed copies of the Holy Quran that were seized had incomplete information like no name and address of the printers and publishers, the printing address and relevant numbers.

"Also, we found that there was lack of information on whether the copies had the right meaning and certified by the Controlling Board, Licensing and Printing Quranic texts as required under Section 6 or 7 under the Printing Al-Quran Texts Act 1986," she said.

Those found guilty of the offences could be charged under Section 8 and 14 of the same Act that carries a maximum fine of RM20,000 or jail up to five years or both. She disclosed that they have yet to charge any individual or company in court for committing the offences last year.
