New President of Int’l Union of Muslim Scholars Named

The IUMS board of trustees held a session in which Habib Salim Segaf al-Jufri was named the new chief of the union, Al-Ray news website reported.

The session was organized virtually, the IUMS announced in a statement on Saturday.

Al-Jufri has replaced Ahemd al-Raissouni, who submitted his resignation recently, according to the statement.

Born in the city of Solo (Surakarta) in central Java, Indonesia, al-Jufri is the first IUMS president from Asia.

He previously served as one of the union’s three deputies. He also used to serve as Indonesia’s minister of social affairs.

Al-Raissouni, who is a Moroccan scholar, resigned from his post after his recent comments about Western Sahara sparked controversy.

Founded in 2004, the International Union of Muslim Scholars is headquartered in the Qatari capital of Doha.
