Security departments in the North African country’s Gafsa Governorate detained the qari on Sunday, Khalijonline website reported.
According to a Tunisian security source, he, along with a number of other people, has been arrested at the order of the country’s prosecutor general.
The source said an investigation has been launched into Al-Refaei’s activities and the organization that has invited him to Tunisia for religious activities.
Hannan al-Khamiri, the arrestees’ lawyer, said a total of six individuals, including the Kuwaiti qari, have been detained in the case.
He said the counterterrorism section of Tunisia’s judiciary is handling the case.
According to Khamiri, they had organized a Quran memorization competition for children on Thursday.
He said the organizers had informed local and regional authorities about it but security forces stormed the venue of the contest and arrested six people.
A number of Kuwaiti figures and lawmakers have expressed concern over the arrest of Al-Refaei, saying that he has been engaged in Quranic activities for six years and has had cooperation with different groups in different countries.
