IQNA – A delegation from the International Union of Muslim Scholars (IUMS) that planned to travel to the Gaza Strip through Egypt was prevented from entering the Palestinian enclave.

IUMS Secretary General Ali Muhyiddin al-Qaradaghi said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, that the delegation was barred from entering Gaza, Buratha news agency reported.

“For those asking about the obstacles on the way of the delegation’s entry into Gaza, I would say that there has been no failure and negligence on our part. But the conditions are complicated and one cannot ignore the existing restrictions.

“Nonetheless, I am determined to reach Gaza although it required more time and efforts,” he added.

“I urge everyone to appreciate the difficult conditions we are facing and the challenges on the way of reaching the (Rafah) border crossing. We are making all-out efforts to overcome these problems and reach Gaza as soon as possible.”

Earlier this month, al-Qaradaghi had said the IUMS has asked for support from Egypt and Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayeb, the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar University, to facilitate their journey to the Gaza Strip.

He said he conveyed the request to Egypt to travel to Gaza a month earlier, expressing his eagerness to be the first to register for the trip, emphasizing not just to Rafah but directly to Gaza.

Israel has launched relentless air and ground attacks on the Gaza Strip since Oct. 7, 2023.

More than 25,000 Palestinians have since been killed, mostly women and children, and 62,000 injured, according to Palestinian health authorities.

According to the UN, 85% of the population of Gaza is already internally displaced amid acute shortages of food, clean water and medicine, while 60% of the enclave’s infrastructure is damaged or destroyed.
