Ayatollah Reza Ramezani, who has traveled to Brazil to take part in a conference titled “Islam, Religion of Dialogue and Life”, made the remark in a gathering of Muslim women from different Latin American countries
He referred to the growth of feminism in the West over the past decades and said that the result has been the instrumental use of women in Western societies.
The cleric called on the Muslim women to study about the rights of women, learn legal terms in these fields and tell the world that Islam is the only religion that can defend human rights, including the rights of women.
He also dismissed the idea that the West has initiated the human rights discourse, noting that Imam Sajjad (AS), the fourth Shia Imam, wrote Risalat al-Huquq (Treatise on Rights) 1,250 years ago.
Ayatollah Ramezani added that the words of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) and Imam Ali (AS) about women are available to read and all of these contents indicate how Islam attaches importance to the rights of women.
During the time of Jahilliya (era before advent of Islam in Arabia) and at a time when women were considered to be individuals with no identity of their own and having girls was considered a source of shame, the Holy Prophet (PBUH) defended the dignity, identity and rights of women, he stated.
