The deadline for registration in the event was extended to July 9, and nearly 300 individuals, including qaris and Tawasheeh group members, completed their registration, said Seyed Mohammad Moojani, head of the Quranic workgroup of the Arbaeen headquarters’ cultural and educational committee.

Speaking to IQNA on Friday, he said that a special committee will hold sessions in the coming weeks to evaluate the qualifications of the candidates and select the members of the convoy.

According to plans, the convoy will have more than 100 members, he said, adding that the costs of the convoy will be covered by Awqaf and Charity Affairs Organization, Al-Mustafa International University, and Islamic Revolution Guards Corps.

The Arbaeen mourning ceremony is one of the largest religious gatherings in the world.

It marks the 40th day after Ashura, the martyrdom anniversary of the grandson of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), Imam Hussein (AS). This year’s Arbaeen is expected to fall on August 25, depending on the moonsighting.

Each year, a huge crowd of Shias flock to Karbala, where the holy shrine of Imam Hussein (AS) is located, to perform mourning rites.

The pilgrims, mainly from Iraq and Iran, travel long routes on foot to the holy city.

The members of Iran’s Noor Convoy perform different Quranic and religious programs, including recitation of the Quran, Adhan (call to prayers), and Tawasheeh on the road between Najaf and Karbala during the Arbaeen march.
