IQNA – The Shia Ulema (scholars) Council of Afghanistan has strongly condemned the “horrific” terrorist attack targeting a group of Shia Muslims in central Afghanistan.

Releasing a statement on Friday, the council wished the martyrs a high status and the injured a speedy recovery, also offering condolences to the grieving families.

The council “once again seriously calls on the security officials of the Islamic Emirate to promptly arrest the perpetrators of this heinous crime and bring them to justice for their disgraceful actions,” reads the statement.

More than a dozen civilians were killed in the Daesh-operated terrorist attack in Afghanistan while they were gathered to welcome pilgrims arriving from holy sites in Karbala.

According to Afghan media outlets, the attack occurred around midday on Thursday in the Karyudal area, which lies on the border between Daykundi and Ghor provinces.

The victims were Shia Muslims from Sang Takht district in Daykundi province, who had traveled to Karyudal to meet relatives returning from a pilgrimage to the holy Iraqi city of Karbala.

The terrorists reportedly halted a bus carrying the residents under the pretense of taking photographs and then opened fire on them.

A source in Daykundi province, who requested anonymity for security reasons, told AFP news agency that 14 people had been killed and at least four others wounded in the attack.

“Unfortunately, the recurrence of such horrific incidents in the country shows that, despite some claims, the series of brutal acts of killing innocent people continues,” the Shia council added.

“Undoubtedly, it is the definite responsibility of the government to more seriously confront these insecurities,” highlighted the statement.

Shia Muslims form a minority in Afghanistan that is mostly drawn from the country’s Hazara community. The community accounts for about 22 percent of Afghanistan’s population. Its members have been targeted in several large-scale kidnappings and killings, including by the Daesh Takfiri terrorist group, across Afghanistan in the past.
